Deeper Questions

What do you do at IOI?

I am working as a Senior Lighting Artist – doing lighting for our amazing game locations and environments. I started working at IOI in 2006 as an Environment Artist on the “Kane and Lynch” project, after which I was working on Mini Ninjas.

I started working on the Hitman games from the “Hitman Absolution” time as an Environment Artist and was a part of producing Hitman games for many years and been an Environment track owner on such levels as: Paris, Bangkok, Mumbai, Haven Island (Maldives). On the latest HITMAN 3 project I was working as a Lead Environment Artist but I also was an Environment track owner on the “Mendoza” location. I was working as a Lead Environment Artist on HITMAN live missions as well as doing the Art Direction and lighting.

I was always in love with lighting as one of the most powerful tools to affect the final quality, so  two years ago I have decided to try something different and I have switched from Environment department to Lighting department. I am very happy and enjoying to do lighting, because good lighting very important for the look of the game.

Can you tell us more about yourself?

I am originally from Ukraine, have been living in Denmark for 17 years. 6 years ago I got Danish citizenship. I love to have both cultural backgrounds!

I have meet my husband at Architectural Academy where we were studying as Construction Building engineers. At University one of our teacher been very patient about 3d visualization of Architecture objects. We have started to learn 3D Studio together (it was before 3D Max). We fell in love with creation of3-dimensional worlds, so after University we both decided to work in the game industry instead of the Architectural industry. We are both still working in the game industry and for the last 16 years together at IOI.

We share a lot of common interests 🙂

What's your daily source of inspiration?

Real world, travels, art, music, movies. Because I am working as Lighting Artist and previous years was working as Environment Artist I am very patient and very interested in architecture, design and lighting. To get inspiration for my work I am traveling a lot, to be able experience different environments which will help me to build real and believable environments in the games.

I am also watching a lot of TV series and movies to get cinematic inspiration. In general I like to observe people on the streets, I like to see fashion show and exhibitions. All of this help me in my daily work.

Why are you passionate about what you do?

I like to visit beautiful places and I like to create beautiful environments with a lot of details, polished and believable. I am enjoying when I am reading comment in forums and people can recognize their places (even changed for gameplay reasons), but it is showing that we are very patient with our work and that we have prepared our home work and created real world in the games.

What projects do you work on outside of work?

I am doing together with my husband fashion photography. We have been working with some Danish model agencies and our work have been printed in a few magazines. I am mostly doing styling and helping with post production of the pictures. I am also have my Instagram blog where I am posting and writing about our travels and posting fashion pictures.

What's your most memorable IOI moment?

The Hitman Absolution Release party. The party was very big and beautiful. The party community recreated some places from the game such as “Shaving Lenny Barber Shop” from the level I have been working as a Environment track owner, and a lot of people even shaved their head and got Hitman barcode tattoos. 😊

Another very memorable moment was our research trip to Mumbai to get some real inspiration of local vibes and tones of references pictures. We met many locals there, got a lot of cultural inspiration and knowledge and visited many interesting places.

What's the best bit of advice you've ever been given?

It was an  idiom “ Stick to your guns”- which means hold fast to a statement, opinion, or course of action.
